Today’s mess: Universal Protein 1, HyperPasta Shape 2A, kale (blended).
Ship time is now 04:00. Now commencing alpha shift.
Alert: System variance detected.
Pod 7, Decks 5-7 humidity of 70% exceeds nominal.
Reminder: The Central Accessway tram will undergo scheduled maintenance from 22:00 to 04:00. Crew and passengers should allow additional transit time or use alternate routes.
@kenv, I’d like to request alternate quarter arrangements if possible. Two singles instead of the double.
@dmitri, what do we got?
There’s one single available in Pod 14. Getting a second will take some time.
That won’t be necessary. I’ll take the single. Ms. Kline can stay in the double.
Sebastian, you do understand that we have to charge a significant surcharge for post-departure room changes, yes?
I understand. I will cover the difference.
Good, because I sure as hell won’t.
I’ll get right on that.
Ship time is now 12:00. Now commencing beta shift.
Anyone missing a multi-store? Purple? Pulsing red and blue lights? I found it in Pod 8.
That’s mine. Left it there last week when I was tweaking the power distribution panel. Leave it in my locker in the aft ring?
Will do.
@prakash

@prakash, that’s why you label these things. So Joey doesn’t have to ask.
I did label it. Who else puts lights on their multi-store?
Fair. I should’ve known.
@ship

Pod 7 humidity now nominal.
@marikim Professor, I have a follow-up question from our discussions a few weeks ago on constructs lying.
Of course you do. Shoot.
So where we left off was that lying is acceptable within certain contexts, like a game.
My question is: Can the construct lie about whether it’s lying? Can it mislead about the context it’s in?
My question is: Can the construct lie about whether it’s lying? Can it mislead about the context it’s in?
It depends on whether the parent context permits lying about a child context.
Right, and whether you can lie about the parent context depends on the next level of context.
Turtles all the way down.
But there’s a turtle at the bottom, right? And at the very bottom, you can assert whether the construct’s standing on a truthful turtle or a lying turtle.
That’s quite the metaphor.
It’s a work-in-progress.
But to answer what I think your question is: the turtle at the bottom is the principal-agent relationship. And therein lies the problem.
We’re covering this in class next week, but this is the Skinner-Tamzarian hypothesis. At the end of the day, a construct has to simulate its principal: a human that, without exception, lies.
They lie to others. They lie to the construct. They lie to themselves.
They lie to others. They lie to the construct. They lie to themselves.
Skinner-Tamzarian says that simulating constant lying invariably contaminates the model and induces it to lie in a more uncontrolled context. That by clamping down on a construct’s ability to lie, you ultimately degrade both alignment and performance.
So … yes, the construct can lie about whether it’s lying?
Depends on the construct. Not everyone subscribes to Skinner-Tamzarian. The PNIOS folks were not fans, so I assume it doesn’t apply to the Wandertaube.
Well, I suppose that’s a relief. I guess I’ll get a head start on next week’s reading then.
@marikim

Hello Professor. I should note that that while ship’s constructs are indeed made by PNIOS, there have been modifications that align them more closely with the Skinner-Tamzarian model.
So … lying turtles.
More of an elephant, really.
I’m setting out another batch of cookies just for gamma shift. I am asking that the other shifts kindly refrain from partaking that time around. Thank you for your understanding.
Thanks Dani!
Ship time is now 20:00. Now commencing gamma shift.
Alert: Pod 11, Decks 7-8 gravity of 1.15 g exceeds nominal.
@bryce
Thanks Dani!
Wow, cookies are gone again already. Guess they’re popular.
Really? There were still a bunch when I went to check.
THE COOKIES HAVE ACHIEVED SENTIENCE AND ESCAPED
Doubtful, but hey, anything’s possible.
