OK, so this may sound silly, but you remember how the ship refused to help track Wally? Well, those restrictions don’t apply to data streams used by Zalmux for navigation.
So Zalmux helped you triangulate Wally for the purposes of “navigation”. What does that have to do with the artifact?
Well, I was a bit … frustrated about not knowing what was happening at the artifact site during the response window, so I asked Zalmux if Wally was at the artifact site.
I did not perceive the presence of procyonids proximate to the artifact site.
@zalmux, do you still have datastreams used to verify the … lack of raccoons?
I do, Professor, and to answer your anticipated query, yes, the decay envelope you observed is present here as well.

@ifer, I must tell you that under normal circumstances, I would be quite angry at you for violating protocol. We do not fully understand how perception works. Zalmux’s observations could, and very well may, have altered the conditions at the artifact site.
But these are not normal circumstances. I expect you at my office hours tomorrow with a full accounting of what exactly it is you asked Zalmux to do, but … thank you.
