Attention all crew and passengers: As you may know, we came out of the last jump well outside our expected arrival envelope. We’ve since re-established communication with the rest of the convoy and confirmed they all made it through safely.
The good news is that our jump placed us closer to our next jump than the original schedule called for. So we get to coast for a bit while the rest of the convoy closes the gap to us. As of now, itinerary remains unchanged.
The less good news is that the jump generated considerably more excess heat than our systems are rated for. Some of you may have noticed we’ve unfurled the radiators. That helps, but we will also need to limit overall thermal activity.
So effective immediately, we are rationing power consumption and heat generation. Rationing is expected to last 8 weeks, at which point we should be able to rendezvous with the rest of the convoy and redistribute heatsinks and get back to something resembling normalcy.
I’ll be honest with you. Things are going to get uncomfortable but we all need to do our part. The alternative is being cooked alive by the very systems meant to sustain us. Thank you. We’ll get through this.
Captain, with respect, my students have spent this entire voyage in cargo pods that already run warm and shudder on every maneuver. Before we ration watts off the people living down here, can we be clear about how much of this heat is living space and how much is cargo and manufacturing?
@mokonkwo, I assure you that we are prioritizing living conditions over cargo and industry, full stop. We have a lot of levers to pull before we get anywhere near environmental controls in living spaces.
That is reassuring to hear stated plainly. A written list of what measures are being taken would be helpful. I think we all take comfort in specifics.
Understood. We’ll post them on the network shortly.

I told a room full of students that this voyage would be the making of them. Tonight I am no longer certain it wasn’t the unmaking of all of us, myself included. Some days I cannot tell whether I am running a program or merely apologizing for one.
That was more than I meant to put in a public channel. I apologize. It’s been a long day.
