@dani, you’re an expert on old Earth religions. How do they reconcile the whole “We are simultaneously afraid of and love our god at the same time” thing?
Well, I wouldn’t really say old … but in at least some of those faiths, it’s less about fearing God and more about awe. Standing next to something vast enough that it could unmake you, and choosing to trust it anyway.
There is a sort of love between, you know, fellow humans that is deeply rooted in equality. Mutual respect for each other as individuals. Empathy.
But then you have more asymmetrical relationships and in order to get anywhere with that, you have to be honest about the different places the parties occupy.
OK, but what if it’s not just awe and you really are afraid of the thing you have an asymmetric relationship with?
